RCS templates

Create RCS templates in Slovio: plain text, standalone card and carousel types, the buttons you can add, and the text and media limits operators enforce.

2 min readUpdated

An RCS template is the message you send in an RCS broadcast: plain text, a single rich card, or a carousel of cards with buttons. Create it under RCS → Templates → Create template; it can be sent once it shows Approved.

Create a template

  1. Open RCS in the sidebar and go to the Templates tab.
  2. Create a template and choose its type:
    • Plain Text: a text message, up to 3050 characters.
    • Standalone Card: one card with media, title, description and buttons.
    • Carousel: 2 to 10 cards the customer swipes through, in Small or Medium width.
  3. Save. The template shows Pending until approved, then Approved (or Rejected).

Buttons

Up to 4 per card. Available types: Reply, Open URL, Show Location, Find Nearby, Ask for Location, Dialer and Add to Calendar.

Limits

Item Limit
Button label 25 characters. The operator rejects the whole message if any label is longer.
Card title 200 characters
Card description 2000 characters
URLs 2048 characters, must be https
Card media JPG, PNG, GIF, or MP4, M4V, MPEG, WEBM, H263 video, up to 100 MB. PDFs can't go inside a card.
Video thumbnail Up to 100 KB

Tips

  • Put the action in the first button. Most taps land there.
  • Use a carousel for catalogues: one product per card, with Open URL to the product page.
  • Keep a WhatsApp or RCS fallback on broadcasts for phones that don't support RCS. See Broadcast fallback.

Common questions

From 2 to 10 cards, in Small or Medium width.

Why was my RCS message rejected?

A common cause is a button label over 25 characters. The operator rejects the whole message if any label is too long.

Can I send a PDF on RCS?

Not inside a card. Card media can be an image (JPG, PNG, GIF) or a video.

When is an RCS message charged as Rich?

A plain text message over 160 characters is charged at the Rich message rate instead of the Basic rate.
